Kilauea Lighthouse Celebration

Taking a holiday in Kauai, Hawaii? Well if you are visiting Hawaii in May then be sure to check this event out!

The Hawaii Island of Kauai has a very special birthday this year. Kilauea lighthouse celebrates 100 years of guiding the way to ships and the lighthouse first shone in 1913. The lighthouse served as navigation to ships sailing on the Orient run. Today Kilauea Point is one of Kauai’s most popular sites to visit and has earned its listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The light was decommissioned in 1976, however the US Fish and Wildlife Service acquired it in 1985 and currently they manage the 31 acre site as part of a 203 acre wildlife refuge.

The Kilauea Lighthouse celebrations will run from May 1st – May 5th 2013, with special exhibits on display and daily guided tours of the lighthouse also giving a close up view of the lighthouse interior. Then on the 4th May 2013 a very special treat, the relighting of the lighthouse will take place at dusk. This will be the first time since 2010 that the Kilauea Lighthouse will shine.

So if you are taking a holiday to Hawaii in May then don’t miss this special event.
